Chapter Fifteen—In Which There are Reunions and Prophetic Warnings

Oddly, Lizzy found herself not at all excited about seeing her family again. Given that, up to the moment when she’d been whisked away to AMDA by the Council, she’d spent at least twenty hours of every day worrying and watching over her sisters, she wasn’t quite certain why this was. Perhaps it was just that she didn’t know what to expect.

As she made her way downstairs with Jena beside her, she sort of missed her constant imp companion, Alastair having the day off since there were no classes. Apparently, his romance with Rosalie was now to the “negotiation” stage, which had nothing to do with wedding plans or even families or finances and everything to do with, as Alastair put it, “the right to be rude to each other and see if we still like each other after that.” There were about a dozen rules to such interactions, many of which he’d told her, and she’d forgotten.

Heck, if I still mix up Melius and Meliphon, the intricacies of imp romance are just beyond me.

Anyway, he probably would have been too distracted to help, even if he had been here. And that said nothing of what her family would have made of an imp.

Slipping her a look out of the corner of her eye, Jena guided her around what was apparently nothing on the stairs and Lizzy suspected that it must be some spell, although whether intentional or accidental was difficult to say.

The pitted stone, spiral stairway was crammed with students, family, and friends—as had been the dorm and apparently the hall below—all of them looking quite happy. A few of the visitors were obviously wary of the apparent drops to nowhere off the sides of the staircase, but many hopped up them unconcernedly, so she suspected that they’d either been here before or were at least more used to magical landscapes.

Sadly, she and Jena were already late to meet their family, as they’d been delayed trying to help out Izzy. As none of them wanted to see her cursed to be someone she wasn’t, they’d put some fairly powerful spells on her to assure that she could only show her true self. While Lizzy wondered how many people trusted themselves enough to try that, Izzy had been ecstatic and bounced off down the stairs, Oriana in tow.

Still, it was the many happy reunions around them which made Lizzy realize one of the things which was bothering her.

“How much does everyone know about magic and what we do here?”

Jena looked at her oddly.

“I mean, in our family.”

Somehow, she just couldn’t imagine her sisters or her mother dealing that calmly with the whole magic thing, as they tended to go off in fits about everything else. While she knew the Council had told them originally, it might also have been easier to just wipe their memories after that.

“Mum . . . weeeeellll,” Jena hedged, leading them past some fairies who stood in a group, looking happy and touching the tips of their wings to each other’s.
